Eye tests are very important for checking your vision. A quick check will be done as part of a routine yearly checkup but it will be more detailed if you are being examined because you have a problem with your eyes such as your vision. The test will be done more thoroughly to find out what is causing the problem and to explore the possibility of an underlying health problem.

The Stages Of An Eye Test

Eye tests typically start with a pre-test that is done by opticians or optical assistants. You will be asked questions to get an idea of your lifestyle to pick up anything that may be contributing or causing problems with your eyes. You can expect to be asked about any health conditions you have, any medication you are taking, if you have had eye problems before and whether there is a history of them in your family.

Other Tests Required Before Getting a Prescription

The second stage will see you read from an eye chart one eye at a time. This determines if one or both eyes have a problem such as being long or short-sighted. In the third stage, further eye tests are done using various tools. One is the tonometer that is used to test the pressure in each eye. High pressure may be caused by early-stage glaucoma that can cause blindness.

Another test is done using an autorefractor that tests how well your eyes are focusing. Your optician or assistant will also use an ophthalmoscope to see inside your eyes. Its light makes it possible to see into the pupil and the back of the eye. Finally, for those who wear contact lenses, a slit lamp is used to examine the eye’s outermost surface. The illuminated microscope allows for scratches on the corner and any other abnormalities to be seen.
